How a window tint shop gets into the Google Maps top 3, measured from 49 points across town

A window tint shop gets into the Google Maps top 3 by being the most relevant, nearest and best-known shop for the search a customer types, measured from where that customer is standing. Google ranks the map pack on exactly three things, in its own words: relevance, distance and prominence. You can fix relevance in an afternoon, prominence takes months of reviews, and distance cannot be fixed at all, only worked around. This guide is how we do it for tint shops, measured from 49 points across town instead of from the owner’s phone.

Tint is a nearby purchase. People search “window tint near me”, look at the three shops on the map, read the reviews and call one. The blue links under the map get the people who scroll, and almost nobody scrolls.

First, measure from where the customers are

Searching your own shop from your own phone tells you nothing, because you are standing at the pin. Every week we search “window tint near me”, “car window tinting” and “window tinting [city]” from 49 points laid out in a grid across the shop’s town, and record who holds the top 3 at each point. A point is green when the shop is in the top 3 there. The result is a map that shows the side of town you win and the side a closer shop takes, and a history that shows whether anything moved.

Two reads a few days apart are not a result. The same grid can move by several points with nothing changed, so we call anything under two weeks variation and judge the trend over months.

Relevance: the part you can fix this week

Relevance is how well the profile matches the search. The primary category decides which searches the shop is eligible for at all, so it has to be the one that matches the work (Window tinting service for a tint shop, not Auto repair shop or Car detailing service, even if the shop does those too). The additional categories cover the rest of the services. The services list names what the shop sells, in the words customers use: ceramic window tint, windshield tint, paint protection film, ceramic coating. The description says the film brand and the services plainly. Hours, address and phone match the website exactly.

Three traps. Keywords stuffed into the business name get profiles suspended. A second listing for the same shop, usually left by an old web designer, splits the signals between two profiles. And a website that contradicts the profile, a different phone number or a different list of services, costs trust on both.

Prominence: reviews are the product

Prominence is how well known the shop is, and for a tint shop that is reviews more than anything else. Almost nobody can judge film quality before it is installed, so customers use the only proxy they have: what other people said, how recently, and whether the shop answered. Tint Guy LLC in Murfreesboro, Tennessee had 483 Google reviews in December 2023 and passed 1,000 in September 2026. That is the single biggest reason it holds the top 3 across most of its town.

The method is not complicated. Ask after every install, at the moment the customer is happiest, with a link they can tap in the bay. Answer every review, including the bad ones. Reviews that mention the service and the place (“ceramic tint on my F-150 in Murfreesboro”) do more than “great job”. Google’s own policy allows asking customers for reviews; it does not allow paying for them or gating who gets asked.

Distance: the part you work around

When the three shops shown to a customer sit three miles from them and you sit eight, no field edit fixes that. What moves those points is relevance and prominence aimed at that side of town: reviews from customers who live there, photos and posts from jobs done there, a real page on the website for that part of town with real jobs on it (a page with no job on it is a doorway page and Google treats it as one), and, when the job values justify it, paid cover on that side.

The weekly grid is what tells us which side of town to work next. On most reads the shop’s weak points sit on one compass side, where a closer competitor with a tighter category holds the pack. The actions for that side are the ones above, with an owner and a status, and the grid says whether they worked.

What to check on your own profile today

  1. Search your main service and your town in an incognito window, from somewhere other than the shop. Note who the three are.
  2. Open your profile as the owner. Primary category, additional categories, services list, description, hours. Does each one say what you sell, in the customer’s words?
  3. Count your reviews and your competitors’. If they have three times yours, that is the job for the next six months.
  4. Search your business name. Two listings means a duplicate to resolve before anything else.
  5. Compare your website’s phone, address and services to the profile. They must match.

The map brings the calls; the ads bring the rest, and what those should cost is in window tint advertising: what a lead should cost. We do this every week for the tint shops we work with, and the grid goes in the monthly report next to the lead count. What we do for window tint shops is on one page with prices. If you would rather see your own grid first, book 30 minutes with John and we pull it before the call.

Questions tint shop owners ask about this

How long does it take a tint shop to get into the Google Maps top 3?

Weeks for the profile fixes to be read, months for reviews and proximity to move. Tint Guy LLC went from 31 of 49 points to 34 of 49 between June and September 2026 with the profile already in good shape; the big move, 483 reviews to over 1,000, took from December 2023 to September 2026.

Can a tint shop pay to be in the Google Maps 3-pack?

No. Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. The sponsored pin above the pack is an ad, not a ranking, and it goes away the day the budget does.

Why does my tint shop show in the top 3 from my own phone but not from across town?

Because distance is one of Google’s three ranking factors. Your phone searches from your shop. A customer eight miles away sees the three shops nearest to them with the strongest profiles. That is why we measure from 49 points across town instead of one.

Results describe one shop, Tint Guy LLC, over specific periods and are not a prediction of what any other business will see. Map positions come from a 49-point weekly grid; reviews from the live Google Business Profile and, for December 2023, the review count shown on the shop’s website at the time. Google’s ranking factors are quoted from its own local ranking documentation.
