Facebook ads for businesses nobody is searching for yet.
Google reaches people already looking for you. Meta reaches people who were not looking at all. That difference decides whether Facebook ads work for your business, and it is the thing most agencies skip past on the way to taking your budget.
Search is intent. Meta is interruption.
Somebody typing “emergency roof repair” has a problem right now. You are answering a question they asked. That is why search converts well and costs a lot.
Nobody scrolling Facebook is looking for a contractor. You are interrupting them. That makes clicks much cheaper and the intent much colder, and it means Meta works brilliantly for some businesses and burns money for others.
Meta usually works when
- The need is visual: remodels, cabinetry, landscaping, medspa
- People do not know the service exists or that they need it
- The job is planned rather than urgent
- You have real photos of finished work
- You are building a local brand over months
Meta usually struggles when
- The need is an emergency: burst pipe, no heat, roof leak
- Nobody thinks about the service until they need it
- You have no photography worth showing
- The ticket is small and the margin is thin
- You need booked jobs this week
If you are a restoration company, put your money in search. Nobody browses Facebook and decides their basement is flooded. If you build custom kitchens, Meta may outperform search, because the customer did not know they wanted it until they saw one.
Meta will spend your budget in places you did not choose.
This is not a warning we read somewhere. It is from our own campaign, and it is the single most useful thing we can tell you about running Meta ads.
We set placements to feed only. Facebook feed, Instagram feed, nothing else. Then we checked where the money actually went over fourteen days.
| Placement | Spend | Clicks | Leads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Facebook feed | $269.94 | 111 | 4 |
| Facebook reels overlay | $51.91 | 289 | 0 |
| Facebook reels | $27.76 | 5 | 0 |
| Audience Network, classic | $19.68 | 29 | 0 |
| Instagram feed | $18.72 | 5 | 0 |
| Audience Network, rewarded video | $15.05 | 229 | 0 |
Look at the rewarded video row. $15 bought 229 clicks and zero leads. That placement appears inside mobile games, where people tap ads to earn in-game currency. Those clicks are technically real and commercially worthless, and they make your click-through rate look excellent while producing nothing.
Combined, about a third of the budget went to placements we had explicitly excluded. Once we locked it down properly, feed share went to 99.9 percent. Most advertisers never look at this report, which is exactly why the leak survives.
Broad targeting, narrow placements, many creatives.
Meta’s targeting has changed and a lot of advice has not caught up. Interest stacks and tight demographics used to be the craft. Now the algorithm finds buyers better than manual targeting does, provided you give it room and enough creative to test.
Broad audiences, not interest stacks
Location and minimal constraints, letting the system find who responds. Over-targeting starves it of the data it needs.
Counterintuitive, correctFeed placements, locked
Feed only, then verified in the placement report rather than trusted. See the table above for why the verification is the part that matters.
Checked monthlyCreative volume as the lever
Creative is the targeting now. Several genuinely different angles running at once, because you cannot predict which one lands and the algorithm sorts it out faster than you can.
Where the work goesConversions, not clicks
Optimizing for leads rather than traffic, with the pixel and server-side tracking wired properly so the algorithm learns from real outcomes.
Non-negotiableTwo things that will slow you down.
Meta needs conversion volume to optimize, and small budgets may never reach it. The algorithm learns from conversions. Below roughly 50 per week it is largely guessing, and most local service businesses at a modest budget never get there. It still works, it just works less efficiently than the case studies suggest.
Attribution will disappoint you. Meta counts a conversion if somebody saw an ad and converted within the window, even if they later found you on Google. Meta’s reported numbers will usually exceed what you can verify. Anybody presenting Meta’s dashboard as literal truth is either inexperienced or hoping you are.
We report what we can verify against your actual leads, which sometimes means telling you the platform’s number is flattering.
What owners ask about Facebook ads.
Should I run Facebook ads or Google Ads?
If people search for your service when they need it, start with Google. Emergency and urgent trades belong there.
If your service is visual, planned, or something people do not know they want, Meta can outperform search at a lower cost per click. Many businesses run both, with search capturing demand and Meta creating it.
How much budget do I need to start?
Enough to generate consistent conversions, because the algorithm cannot optimize without them. Spreading a small budget across many ad sets is the most common way local businesses waste money on Meta: nothing gets enough data to learn from.
Fewer ad sets with more budget each beats the reverse, every time.
Do I need video, or will photos work?
Photos work, and real ones beat polished ones consistently. A phone photo of an actual finished job usually outperforms a designed graphic, because it looks like something a neighbor posted rather than an advertisement.
Video helps, but do not let its absence stop you starting.
How long before Facebook ads work?
Expect a couple of weeks of learning before the numbers mean anything, and 30 to 60 days before you can judge properly. The most common error is changing things every few days, which restarts learning and guarantees the campaign never settles.
Who owns the ad account and the pixel data?
You do. We work in your Business Manager rather than running you through ours. The pixel data in particular is worth protecting, because it is the accumulated learning that makes future campaigns cheaper, and starting over means starting over.
What does management cost?
